Why is My AC Ineffective?

It’s that time of year in Arizona when the whir of an air conditioning system is an ever-present part of daily life, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! Surviving the summer here, with temperatures hovering in the 100s, requires some serious work by a home cooling system.

That’s why it’s so incredibly frustrating when you’re running your AC day and night, but you still don’t feel comfortable. If your unit is fewer than 10 years old, you probably can’t blame subpar performance on advanced age.

So, what could the problem be?

Here at Plumbing & A/C Medic, as we travel around the Scottsdale area providing AC tune-ups, we encounter plenty of complaints about ineffective cooling systems. Homeowners report that their units never stop running. They say that they have to wait hours for the system to respond to a small thermostat adjustment. Or, they wonder why their home never seems to get cooler than the mid-80s.

There are a number of possible explanations for insufficient AC performance in this brutally hot climate. We highlighted a few of the most common Arizona air conditioning issues in this infographic.

We don’t expect you to recognize or diagnose any of the above issues on your own; that’s why we’re here. It’s a good idea to give us a call if you’re feeling uncomfortably warm despite your AC’s best efforts. We’ll be able to determine whether your unit actually needs repair, or if there’s another culprit that needs to be addressed — such as leaky air ducts or poorly sealed doors and windows that are letting in too much outdoor air.

There are a few additional steps that you can take to boost your overworked AC’s cooling power.

  • Upgrade curtains and blinds to heat-blocking window shades to keep out the intense heat of the sun during the day.
  • Use fans to circulate air in rooms you use the most; this will make those rooms feel much cooler.
  • Have an energy audit performed on your home to identify insulation problems or air leaks.
  • Vacuum and dust frequently to keep excess dirt and grit from entering your cooling system and putting additional strain on the components.

If you need the help of a trained professional to troubleshoot or fix a broken air conditioner in Scottsdale or any neighboring community, don’t sweat out another day. Give Plumbing & A/C Medic a call and let us whip your system into proper shape for the long, hot upcoming summer months!
