Does AC Size Matter?
When determining which air conditioning unit is best for your home or business, there are many factors to consider. It is important that you understand for yourself why the size of an air conditioning unit is important, instead of just relying on someone else’s opinion. Many people assume that the bigger a unit is, the better it will be, but there are several reasons that is not the case. Here are a few:
1) An oversized unit will not be able to properly remove humidity from the air in your home or business. Because of the way the inner-workings of an AC unit function, when air passes over the evaporator coil, it cools 20 degrees and then condenses the water from the air into the coils of the unit. When it has so condensed, it drops into a pan below and drips out of the unit. Here’s the problem- of the unit is too big for a space, the water will condense and drop to the pan, but it will not collect enough to drain to the outside of the unit, thereby recycling the water back into the air.
2) A unit that is too big and powerful for a space will have to turn on and off frequently, because it will quickly cool the area, then shut down, then need to turn back on for a short burst, and so forth. For the same reason that you get better miles per gallon in your car when you are on the highway (i.e. not starting and stopping), your AC unit functions better and has less wear and tear when it doesn’t have to do that.
